The importance of eyes in daily activities!

Do our eyes play an important role in our daily life?

For no doubt, eyes are needed for every activities in our daily routine.

Lets further discuss about the common eyes symptoms most of us facing nowadays.

  • Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) symptom

What is AMD?

AMD is a chronic disease which lead to vision loss among people of age 50 or older. It is a disease that causes the gradual loss of sight due to blurring or loss of central vision. This is often as a result of deterioration of the macula. The severity of the disease depends on each person and on how quickly it is detected.

*Early detection is important to potentially stop the spread of the disease and to protect your sight.

  • Dryness symptom

A very common symptom occurs when the eyes do not make enough tears or the tears evaporate too quickly. This leads to the eyes drying out and becoming red, swollen and irritated.

Dryness can be caused by:
  • Spending  too much time on 3c products: phones, computers, ipad, etc
  • Wearing contact lens for long hours
  • Perhaps due to dusty working environment
  • Side effect of eyes surgery

  • Cataracts symptom

Most cataracts develop due to aging or injury changes the tissue that makes up your eye's lens. Some inherited genetic disorders that cause other health problems can increase your risk of cataracts. It can also be caused by other eye conditions, past eye surgery or medical conditions such as diabetes.

  • Floaters symptom

Eyes floaters appear as small spots that drift through your field of vision. They may stand out when you look at something bright, like white paper or a blue sky. They tend to dart away when you try to focus on them.

They come in many different shapes:
  • Black or grey dots
  • Squiggly lines
  • Threadlike strands, which can be knobby and almost see-through
  • Cobwebs
  • Rings

  • Glaucoma symptom

Glaucoma is often linked to a buildup of pressure inside your eye. It tends to be inherited and may not show up until later in life. It can damage the optic nerve and lead to permanent vision loss.

  • Astigmatism symptom

A common vision problem caused by an error in the shape of the cornea. With astigmatism, the lens of the eye or the cornea, which is the front surface of the eye, has an irregular curve. This can change the way light passes, or refracts, to your retina.

Astigmatism usually causes vision to be blurred or distorted to some degree at all distances. Symptom of uncorrected astigmatism are eye strain and headaches, especially after reading or other prolonged visual tasks. Squinting also is a very common symptom.

  • Lazy eye symptom

Most commonly happen to children. Lazy eye occurs from poor alignment of the eyes and eyes being irregularly shaped - focusing is difficult. One eye being more near/far sighted from the other one.

Signs and symptoms of lazy eye include:
  • An eye that wanders inward or outward
  • Eyes that appear to not work together
  • Poor depth perception
  • Squinting or shutting an eye
  • Head tilting
  • Abnormal results of vision screening tests

  • Myopia symptom

Myopia = shortsightedness

The most common refractive error of the eye, and it has become more prevalent in recent years.

If you are shortsighted, you typically will have difficulty reading road signs and seeing distant objects clearly, but will be able to see well or close-up tasks such as reading and computer use.

Other signs and symptoms of myopia include squinting, eye strain and headaches. Feeling fatigued when driving or playing sports also can be a symptom of uncorrected shortsighted.

If you experience these signs while wearing your glasses or contact lenses, schedule a comprehensive eye examination to see if you need stronger prescription.

  • Presbyopia symptom

Presbyopia is an eye condition in which your eye slowly loses the ability to focus quickly on objects that are close. It is a disorder that affects everyone during the natural aging process.

The most common symptoms of presbyopia occur around age 40 for most people.

Common symptoms of presbyopia are:
  • having eyestrain or headaches after reading or doing close work
  • having difficulty reading small print
  • having fatigue from doing close work
  • needing brighter lighting when reading or doing close work
  • needing to hold reading material at an arm's distance to focus properly on it
  • overall problems seeing and focusing on objects that are close to you
  • squinting

  • Detached retina symptom

Retinal detachment can occur as a result of:
  • A sagging vitreous - the gel-like material that fills the inside of your eye
  • Injury/ accident
  • Advanced diabetes

You are at a greater risk of developing a retinal detachment if:
  • You are older than 50
  • You or a family member has had a detached retina
  • You are extremely shortsighted

Retinal detachment itself is painless. But warning signs almost always appear before it occurs or has advanced, such as:
  • The sudden appearance of many floaters - tiny specks that seem to drift through your field of vision
  • Flashes of light in one or both eyes
  • Blurred vision
  • Gradually reduced side vision
  • A curtain-like shadow over your visual field

  • Night blindness

People with night blindness symptom usually experience poor vision at night or dimly lit environment. You are more likely to experience night blindness when your eyes transition from a bright environment to an area of low light, such as when you leave a sunny sidewalk to enter a dimly lit restaurant. Also, you will experience poor vision when driving due to the intermittent brightness of headlights and streetlights on the road.

Although the term 'night blindness' implies that you can't see at night, this isn't the case. You may just have more difficulty seeing or driving in darkness.

A number of eye conditions can cause night blindness, including:
  • shortsighted or blurred vision when looking at faraway objects
  • cataracts or clouding of the eye's lens
  • retintis pigmentosa, which occurs when dark pigment collects in your retina and creates tunnel vision
  • usher symptom, which is a genetic condition that affects both hearing and vision

* How to detect whether you having this symptom?

Off the light in the room, if more than 1 minute you still can't see anything meaning you are suffering from night blindness.
